Call Me They

I've been thinking

about gender a lot,

who I am

and who I'm not.

Some Friends weren't

sure what to say,

till I asked them

to call me they.

Now I'm free

to breathe and be

true to myself—

Y'all,

this

is

me.

Greetings readers. It's Friday! Check out other poets at this week's Poetry Friday Roundup hosted by Laura Purdie Salas. She has a new book coming out soon—Flurry, Float, and Fly!

  6. Doida, I love this impactful poem written in such simple language. So clear, laying your heart bare. I struggled with "they" for years. As an English major and word fanatic, I really would've preferred a completely new pronoun that offered less confusing pronoun objects. But, finally, finally, it's rolling off my tongue more easily. I hate when I slip up...but I'm getting there. xo
