Over the summer I grew a lot,
acquired a raging haircut
and the glasses I got
make me feel like a new kid
going back to school
wearing elevated kickers
and an earring too,
And I feel like I'm changing
and I'm feeling like it's good,
like I'm ready for the world,
like I really really could
be a whole new person,
be whoever I may be—
and I like it that I’m someone
who is so uniquely me.
Welcome! I am so glad you are here. I read your poem and remember my own middle school days - they were difficult, and poems like this are so important for all of us as we discover who we are...."so uniquely us." Take good care. Peace, a.
ReplyDeleteThank you Amy, and thanks for hosting. 🙂
DeleteI love the self acceptance and pride in your poem that would be so affirming to an early adolescent. Especially at a time when not being like everyone else is a hard place to be.

DeleteThis is the 2nd or 3rd poem on this theme I've read today, including our roundup host Amy's! It's such an important thing for kids to hear again and again.
ReplyDeleteYes, I noticed that too!
DeleteWonderful! I can feel the pride and confidence you have in your words. Keep it up!

ReplyDeleteMiddle school/junior high — it's such a time of change, exploration, and discovery. (I would never go back! 😁)
ReplyDeleteI can feel this kiddo's happiness with their current (maybe new and permanent?) persona. Ah, a new school year — freshly sharpened pencils, and fresh perspectives!
Nope, I wouldn't go back either! :-)
DeleteYay! So happy you are throwing your hat in the ring. Your words need to get out there. So important for the tweens to see themselves in your work.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy! :-)
DeleteWelcome to Poetry Friday! Three cheers for a poem that encourages self-love and the embracing of change!
